Community Health Screening for refugees and adult migrants in vulnerable situations

On 25 October 2025, the Santo Amaro Youth Centre in Laranjeiro (Almada) hosted the Community Screening for Adult Refugees and Migrants in Particularly Vulnerable Situations, an initiative that is part of the ACOLHER Programme, promoted by the Egas Moniz School of Health & Science and the Almada City Council, in partnership with AD SUMUS – Almada Immigrants Association and the Portuguese Society for Health Literacy (SPLS).

The ACOLHER Programme is a pioneering national initiative of the Portuguese Society for Health Literacy, dedicated to the early detection of priority health problems in refugee populations and adult migrants in vulnerable situations. The programme’s mission is to promote equitable access to health, strengthen health literacy and contribute to disease prevention through an inclusive, humanised and culturally sensitive approach.

During the screening, participants had the opportunity to undergo free assessments in different areas of health, including physiotherapy, diabetes, high blood pressure, mental health and sexual health.

This initiative reinforces the joint commitment of the partner institutions to promoting health, social inclusion and the well-being of the most vulnerable populations, contributing to a more informed, healthy and supportive community.
