CLAIM-Laranjeiro

CLAIM-Laranjeiro is an extremely important outreach service in the social network of the municipality of Almada, providing useful information and access to fundamental goods and services that are essential in the process of welcoming and integrating immigrants. Since April 2014, this association has provided a specialized information service, continuing the work of the Local Support Centre for the Integration of Migrants (CLAIM), which has been located in the parish of Laranjeiro since 2009, as a result of a partnership with the High Commissioner for Migration (ACM), and subsequently formed a formal and financial partnership with Almada City Council, within the scope of the Municipal Plan for the Integration of Migrants in the Municipality of Almada (PMIMA), in the promotion of CLAIM-Laranjeiro (2019-2023).

However, since June 2024, as part of the FAMI-2023-FAMI-00327600 application, submitted to the FAMI 2030-2023-4 notice, the association has been running CLAIM Laranjeiro, with itinerant activities in the parish of Almada.

The general aim of CLAIM Laranjeiro is to provide useful information to third-country nationals (TCN) in the face of the challenges associated with their migration context in Portugal. The service adopts a multidimensional and articulated approach, which is broken down into two main components: CLAIM-Care and CLAIM-Training.

In terms of individual, face-to-face services, the intention is to continue with the service points and their itinerancy throughout the municipality, i.e. service points will be set up in the parishes of Laranjeiro/Feijó, the Caparica/Trafaria Parish Union and the Almada, Cova da Piedade, Cacilhas and Pragal Parish Union. This service will deal with general issues related to the process of receiving and integrating PTNs into national territory, including regularization, mediation in access to the National Health Service (SNS), housing and education. It is also planned to integrate two specialized services: one focused on support for professional (re)insertion, school and professional (re)qualification, vocational guidance, and another focused on legal support to ensure that citizens who have had their freedom conditioned as a result of human rights violations are monitored.

On the training side, CLAIM-Training proposes to organize a wide range of training and capacity-building activities. The aim of these actions is to contribute to the technical, personal and social empowerment of NPTs, promoting equal opportunities.

"Nha Codê" Project

The “Nha Codê – Integrated Response” project was established in 2021 as a specialized social support service for immigrant and refugee families living in the municipality of Almada. This initiative is the result of a partnership with the former High Commission for Migration (ACM, IP), now AIMA, under the Support Program for Immigrant Associations.

It consists of operating two food banks, one for families in general and the other specifically for babies aged between zero and three. The weekly distribution of food parcels takes place on Fridays from 4.30pm to 7pm, thanks to the invaluable support of two groups of volunteers, the Girassóis group of volunteers and our senior volunteers.

The project runs two charity stores in Almada, open to the general community. These stores help mobilize funds in support of the Baby Food Bank, while at the same time promoting environmental sustainability by raising awareness of the need to reduce textile waste. They also contribute to active ageing, as the volunteers who visit the stores every day are senior citizens. The solidarity stores, based in the parishes of Laranjeiro and Almada, are open from Monday to Saturday, with opening hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at weekends.

Espaço “SUMUS” Cidadãos

The Espaço “SUMUS” Cidadãos is an initiative developed under the Municipal Support Program for Disadvantaged Communities (PMACD-AML), as part of the Citizenship and Community Empowerment axis of the PRR – Communities in Action Caparica Trafaria.

This project aims to strengthen CLAIM Laranjeiro’s services, extending its support exclusively to residents of the parish of Caparica-Trafaria, providing them with information, guidance and support for their integration into Portuguese society.

The integration of immigrants in Almada involves ensuring that they have clear knowledge of their rights and duties, promoting greater autonomy and active participation in the community. Through individualized assistance and activities developed by the project, migrant citizens and the surrounding community will be able to count on support in the:

– The process of regularization in Portugal;

– Access to essential services – Health, Education, Housing, Employment, Legal and social support;

– Understanding Portuguese laws and regulations;

– Capacity building and training – Organization of workshops and information sessions aimed at the community and technicians from local authorities.

The Municipality of Almada, in partnership with AD SUMUS and other local entities, works to strengthen the social support network, ensuring that all migrant citizens can live with dignity and respect, enjoying their rights and fulfilling their duties.

– 📍At the Caparica and Trafaria Parish Council, Largo da Torre – Monte de Caparica 2829-503 Caparica (Mon, Tue and Wed)

– 📍 And at the Madame Faber Community Space, in Pátio Manuel Batista Lagarto 2825-864 Trafaria (Friday)

📅 Prior booking: Appointments are made by appointment, which can be made at the council or at AD SUMUS via 212954688, 928074593 or 968164434, at the following times:

– Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday: 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.

The project’s itinerancy represents a major challenge, since the community’s travel is, in most cases, limited to basic needs such as health, children’s education, going to the supermarket or commuting to work. Resistance to accessing certain services is often due to a lack of information or distance, which makes dissemination and awareness-raising essential to ensure that more citizens benefit from the support provided.

To overcome these barriers, outreach activities are carried out in the neighborhoods, promoting community participation and encouraging demand for the services offered by the “SUMUS” Citizen Space.

Espaço “SUMUS” Cidadãos remains committed to building bridges between the migrant community and the services available, promoting a more inclusive, informed and participatory society.
